Join us for a tour of the sweet bread of Mexico, Latin and South America as we take a new pastry each week to discuss and share history, our favorites, and other fun facts! Call store for availability.
There are many savory variations of the taco as you know, but we are here to provide the sweet ones! The basic idea of a taco is a piece of flattened dough filled with..well..whatever you want!
The origins of the word ‘taco’ are quite interesting and there is some controversy. We like the theory from Jeffrey Pilcher (a historian and Mexican food connoisseur): taco is Spanish for “plug”. In the 19th century, Mexican miners wrapped gun powder in thin pieces of paper and inserted them into holes to break up the rock.
One of the first references to the word taco was to “taco mineros” – miner’s tacos.
We happily discovered this theory after we decided to use “rock sugar” as the topping of our taco pastry. Serendipity ?
In the US today, sources estimate Americans eat billions of tacos per year. Sure enough, these are a best seller in our store. We also carry pineapple and strawberry. If you have an idea for a new filling flavor, let us know!
